Professor Maarten Kroeze succeeds Professor Aalt Willem Heringa in HiiL Supervisory Board

During the Supervisory Board meeting on 21 January 2010 the Supervisory Board has declared its approval of the appointment of Maarten Kroeze as a member of the Board. Subsequently, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has appointed Professor Kroeze to this position. Maarten Kroeze succeeds Aalt Willem Heringa, who has been of great importance to HiiL since the very early days of HiiL’s existence.  

Maarten Kroeze holds a Chair for Company law at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam and is Dean of Research of the Erasmus School of Law. His research focuses on directors’ liability, shareholder litigation, and comparative company law. He is editor-in-chief of the Dutch legal journal ‘Ondernemingsrecht’ and arbitrator for the Dutch Arbitration Institute.

HiiL is very pleased to welcome Maarten Kroeze to the Supervisory Board and is looking forward to a fruitful cooperation. Also, HiiL wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Aalt Willem Heringa for his efforts over the last years.

New Members HiiL Supervisory Board and Programmatic Steering Board

During its December meeting, the Supervisory Board approved a number of changes in the membership of its own Board as well as of the Programmatic Steering Board.

Due to other responsibilities which did not longer make it feasible to stay on the Supervisory Board, Eric van Damme stepped down as member after being involved with HiiL from the very start of the institute’s existence. The Chair praised the hard work, dedication and interest that Eric van Damme had shown over the years. At the suggestion of Eric van Damme, Thorsten Beck of Tilburg University had been approached and he had indicated a willingness to join the Board as Eric van Damme’s successor.

First Author Seminar successfully held in Berlin on HiiL Rule of Law Research Project

On 26-27 November 2009 an international author’s seminar was held in Berlin, as part of a major HiiL Rule of Law research project launched earlier that year. The seminar - held at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB - Social Science Research Center Berlin) - was hosted by Prof. Michael Zürn, one of the three project leaders, who also chaired the meeting together with the two other leaders of this project, Prof. Andre Nollkaemper and Prof. Randy Peerenboom. The meeting was attended by all those who will contribute a chapter to an edited volume on which work is focused in Phase 1 of this project. Ronald Jansen and Morly Frishman from HiiL attended this meeting on behalf of the Institute.

HiiL Director of addresses the launching conference of the European Academy on Law and Legislation on Styles of Legislation

On 17 December, the director of HiiL addressed the launching conference of the European Academy on Law and Legislation entitled “Styles of Legislation”, held in the Peace Palace in The Hague. In his address, Dr. Muller debated the challenges which internationalisation presents for legislating at the national level. More specifically, he looked at the multilevel challenge, i.e. national legislation in the interplay between national, regional and international rules, and the effects of non-state rule-making on national law making.

HiiL Director participates in the first workshop of the Highest Courts Research group in Bologna

The director of HiiL participated in the first workshop of the Highest Courts research group held on 20 and 21 November at the University of Bologna. After a short opening by Dr. Muller, the two-day workshop saw each of the members of the research group present the first draft of their papers and inviting comments. The exchanges of views were extremely rich, varied and promising and already pointed to potentially hugely interesting and valuable research outcomes on the topic. The workshop was chaired by the Professor Ton Hol, Professor John Bell, and Professor Andrea Lollini, the leaders of the project.
