Justice Needs and Satisfaction Survey in Ethiopia

In an effort to understand the scope of everyday legal challenges in Ethiopia, such as divorces, housing disputes, and employment disagreements, we conducted a Justice Needs and Satisfaction (JNS) Survey. This study aimed to identify who needs justice and protection by the law, how they attempt to resolve their legal issues, and what methods are effective in addressing these concerns.

This study was in collaboration with our partners from the Federal Office of the Attorney General and the Justice and Legal System Research and Training Institute. The findings from the 2020 JNS survey informed a significant decision by Ethiopia’s justice leaders—a collaborative design process to improve dispute resolution and prevention.

In October 2023, a diverse group of stakeholders, including government representatives and justice users, participated in a series of dialogues that led to the development of Community Justice Centers (CJCs).

The results of the JNS survey and updates on the CJCs can also be found on our dedicated Justice Dashboard.
