About the Event

Transitions from conflict and crisis are often approached through separate priorities: security, governance reform, institution-building and economic recovery. Yet one dimension cuts across them all: justice.

People and businesses cannot build secure, resilient lives when they cannot resolve disputes, protect their rights or rely on institutions to treat them fairly. When everyday justice needs go unmet, grievances can deepen, public trust can erode and economic recovery can stall. Conversely, accessible and fair pathways to justice can help rebuild trust, strengthen institutions and support more peaceful and inclusive societies.

What if justice were treated not as an outcome of peace and institutional reform, but as a foundation for both?

As part of Hague Justice Week 2026, HiiL and International IDEA invite policymakers, practitioners and justice-sector experts to explore how justice can help societies move from crisis towards stability and resilience. Drawing on experiences from Ethiopia, the Sahel, Bangladesh and Syria, the discussion will examine how justice systems can respond to the problems people actually face, how institutions can rebuild legitimacy when public trust has been weakened, and how locally grounded approaches to justice can contribute to peacebuilding and inclusive governance.

What to Expect

Justice beyond the courtroom: Explore how formal courts, community-based mechanisms, customary systems and administrative pathways can help people resolve everyday problems, protect their rights and access remedies.

From institutional reform to public trust: Discuss how fair, accessible and accountable justice can strengthen institutional legitimacy, address grievances and support social cohesion in contexts affected by conflict and political transition.

Connecting justice to peace and resilience: Examine how justice fits into wider priorities, including peacebuilding, economic recovery, democratic governance and institutional resilience, and what international actors can learn from locally grounded approaches.

Speakers

  • Nader Nadery: Global Peacebuilding Fellow, HiiL
  • Additional speakers to be confirmed, with perspectives from international organisations, diplomacy and justice-sector practice.
