About the Event
For millions of people worldwide, accessing justice remains a challenge. Legal information is often difficult to understand, expensive to obtain or simply unavailable when it is needed most. Artificial intelligence offers new opportunities to change this. From helping individuals understand their rights to providing accessible legal guidance, AI-powered solutions have the potential to bring justice services closer to underserved communities.
But how do we move from promising innovations to solutions that work responsibly, sustainably and at scale?
As part of Hague Justice Week 2026, Hope Behind Bars Africa and HiiL invite you to an interactive conversation exploring how AI can strengthen people-centred justice across different legal, institutional and social contexts. Drawing on practical experiences from Nigeria, Tunisia, Niger and India, the session will examine the opportunities, risks and real-world decisions involved in developing and scaling AI-powered justice solutions.
What to Expect
Insights from justice innovators and experts: Hear perspectives on responsible AI design, institutional trust, inclusion and the safeguards needed to ensure technology strengthens, rather than replaces, human-centred justice services.
An interactive simulation: From Prototype to Scale-Up: Step into the role of a decision-maker tasked with scaling an AI-powered justice solution. Working in teams, navigate real-world challenges involving ethics, data governance, institutional partnerships, funding and sustainability. Your choices could determine whether the innovation succeeds, stalls or creates unintended consequences.
Practical lessons and cross-border exchange: Explore what different country experiences can teach us about designing solutions that respond to local needs, protect fundamental rights and improve access to justice.
