Lury Nkouessom
Strategic & Operational Support - Mali
I want people to experience justice not as a distant, complex or intimidating system, but as a practical source of protection, dignity and hope, something they can understand, access and trust when their rights, livelihoods and futures are at stake.
Lury Nkouessom is Strategic & Operational Support – Mali at The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL). A lawyer with a PhD in Law, he supports programme implementation, builds partnerships and works with justice stakeholders to develop practical responses to people’s everyday justice needs. He is also a prolific author, most recently publishing Modibo Keita: le Lion de Bamako, a book on the legacy of Mali’s first president.
He has led access to justice and rule of law programmes in West and Central Africa, including as Country Director for ABA ROLI in Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. In Mali, he established the country’s first access to justice call centre and founded SIRA, an AI-powered platform providing legal information on Malian and OHADA law. His work has also supported community paralegal networks and strengthened connections between communities and justice institutions.
Outside work, Lury enjoys spending time with his family, writing and singing karaoke. His interests range from African history and literature to exploring how technology can make legal knowledge more accessible.
